According to a June 19, 2002 article published in the renowned Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), all of us should be taking nutritional supplements.  The article was entitled, "Vitamins for Chronic Disease Prevention in Adults", and it examined the role that certain vitamins play in the prevention of disease.  For example, deficiencies of vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid are noted as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, neural tube defects (a birth defect involving the central nervous system), and colon and breast cancer.  Low levels of vitamin D were cited as contributing to osteoporosis and fractures.  Low levels of antioxidants such as vitamins A, E and C were cited as contributing to an increased rish of severe chronic diseases.  The truth is actually far worse, and human health is being significantly compromised across the board by deficiencies of vital nutrients.

The study goes on to conclude that "most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone."  They state further that "it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements."

The reasons for this widespread situation involve a number of factors such as poor dietary habits, farming practices that deplete soil of nutrients, living in a toxic and stressful environment, poor digestive function and individual differences in the need for certain nutrients.
